Chapter 13

He could still smell the smoke on him from the previous day’s fire when he got up again in the morning, and he took another long shower. Standing under the rejuvenating hot jets, he reflected on the previous day’s work. He had to admit it had been a close-run thing. Once again a last-minute decision. Once again too rushed for proper planning. Just like the hit on the police detective. As a result, once again a near foul-up. He scowled. He knew he had panicked into torching the letting agency after his blunder stiffing the cop. He’d had no reason to believe that the police were imminently going to carry out inquiries at local letting agencies as a means of trying to trace his whereabouts. But he’d reasoned that it would be the logical thing for them to do and as it had turned out, he couldn’t have been more right. After all, why else would Kate Lewis have been visiting a backstreet letting agency? Hardly because she was looking for somewhere to live. Unless, of course, she and that dipstick husband of hers had fallen out.

It struck him as quite ironic, though, that she had been the one to be making the inquiry and on the very day he had chosen to give old man Corbin the Guy Fawkes treatment. But he was glad he had still been there when the building actually went up. The silly bitch may never have survived the blaze if he hadn’t been on hand to pull her to safety. That really would have been a disaster after he’d only just managed to get his game back on track. Still, at least it meant she must have been reinstated on the case, otherwise someone else would have attended. That really was excellent news, and it made the killing of the copper well worthwhile.

But his sense of satisfaction at the way things had finally turned out only lasted until he went downstairs to make himself a coffee. The paper boy from the newsagents in Street had been and the latest edition of the Bridgwater Clarion was lying on his front door mat. He frowned as soon as he glanced at the front page.

The headline ran: Rabid Cluedo Killer Slays Cop.

‘Rabid?’ he murmured to himself and studied the story as he waited for the percolator to go through its gurgling motions.
